Bag Packing for Irish Cancer :)

Today 10 students from St Wolstan's including myself headed to the local Tesco to bag pack for the Irish Cancer Society which is voluntary. When we arrived there we met the women and they handed us our yellow t-shirts that we would be wearing for the afternoon. Soon enough we were into the bag-packing , helping people with their shopping and helping some to their cars. We all had turns at the desk selling raffle tickets, badges and candles. That was great fun , i spent most my time there , rounding up the people to get their raffle tickets. The raffle prize was a huge hamper. It was amazing. Overall i think we made loads of money in the few hours we were there and it was great fun :) if you would like to make a donation click here

Ty Fashion Show :)

Friday the 10th , all transition years had a fashion show in the gym. The fashion show was for the dresses we made in home-economics. We were given a task at the start of the year to make a dress with the color purple. I was in a group with Kellie, Grace, Niamh O'R & Sandra. I must say our dress turned out really well after having so many ideas and we bonded great as a team. I learned new skills that i haven't known before like using the sowing machine. Everyone put in an effort and it showed at the end , everyones dress/outfit was fantastic. The fashion show was held in the gym and we had an audience of 5th and 1st years. The judges were Ms O'H and Ms L. There were 4 boxes of roses given to the group the judges that they thought that stood out from the crowd. My group won a box of roses ;) Yumm !

Christmas Dress-Up :)

Thursday the 9th of December, we had the annual Christmas dress up day. We had to bring in €2 and the money went to the care of the age. The theme was just Christmas for the whole school. Mostly everyone dressed up , it was great fun. I dressed up as Santa Claus must say being Santa for a day is hard work , the heat of the costume. At lunch people who got picked for the parade went and had the parade, i was in a group and i was Santa , Lauren was a present and Chloe and Ruth were the Coca-Cola truck. My group won the selection box for Transition Year :)

Pilates :)

This week we started Pilate's for  double  p.e. A Pilate’s teacher came in to teach us, her name was Angela . It was very unusual, i had never done anything like that before. You use your core muscles to do everything in Pilate's. It strengthens your core muscles and tones your stomach. We did different exercises that are supposed to be relaxing but i thought they were quite hard im sure when i get used to it , it wont be that hard. We were then shown a new way of breathing, you have to like breath without moving your stomach up and down , its all in the ribs and the teacher checked if we were all doing it right. It was interesting as I had never tried it before, I don't really like it as i like things with more energy , but it is very interesting. I'll give it another week to make up my mind but im very grateful of our P.e teachers for giving us this opportunity.

Cookies :)

In home-ec on Tuesday we made beautiful cookies. Ms Mc'A supplied the butter, sugar and flour , which was very nice of her. All we had to do was bring in chocolate. Ive never done home-economics before so i found it hard to use and find loads of the items. I was partners with Roisin which was great because she is deadly at cooking.
First we started off beating the butter and the sugar and when that was done we put in the flour and the chocalate pieces. We put in kit-kats which was amazing. Then we sturred the mixture together until it was kind of sticky so we could put them together. After we had put the mixture on the tray we put them in the oven for 10 minutes and cleaned our area. After 10 minutes they were ready , they were delicious. Im going to make them often there really easy and simple to make. I hope to do more cooking throughout the year :)

Sneachta :)

On Saturday i was greeted by the beautiful snow. Although it looked beautiful it also looked very very cold. Soon enough everyone was out having snowball fights. Unfortunately i was sick until Monday. On Monday in Irish the snow came in buckets it was beautiful, we got off ten minutes early wooo .
That night the snow kept coming and coming and everyone was praying school was closed. Tuesday morning we were all hoping that a text would come in. At 8 o'clock we got the text saying school was closed. It was the highlight of my day. I didn't think we would get a week off. Thank you snow. Throughout the week was alot of fun and games in the snow , going down the hills in castletown, snowball fights and making snowmen. Although the snow is cold , it was great fun. Although everyone was hoping for another week off school, there was no sight of snow. It was fun while it last. Hopefully it snows more even though its cold :)

Advent Wreath Making In Religion :)

In religion class , Ms KB helped us make advent wreaths. I must say the were gorgeous , the looked really beautiful. First of all we got our block of oasis and put it in the oasis holder. Then we put our purple candle in the middle of the block of oasis. After we put all our greenery in the block of oasis such as holly and make it look lovely. It was really fun making them. I thought it would of been much harder to make.

Podcasting Workshop :)

Friday the 26th of November , two lovely men, Chris and Steven came into the school and we had a podcasting workshop. It was great fun , a lovely way to finish off a friday afternoon in school.
First of all they talked to us about how someone can make a podcast. If you go into iTunes U it is really easy to do podcasting. The word podcast comes from the words broadcast and ipod because a podcast is basically a broadcast for an ipod.
After they showed us how to do one we were all seperated into groups and we made our very own podcast. My group done a song called Pass out and we were impersonating Gillain Mc Keith on ' Im a Celebrity Get me Out of Here'. It was really fun and also hilarious to do. It took us little over an hour to make a 1 minute podcast. After we had them alll done we all came together and listened to everyones podcasts. It was really good and everyone done brilliant for a first podcast.
Overall it was a brilliant day and i hope to do more podcasting throughout the year :)

Soccer Match

On Wednesday the 25th , the St Wolstans soccer team headed off to Scoil Mhuire in Clane to play a friendly match against their soccer team. It was a great match even though we lost 2-1 , but it was our first game of the year and some people on the team havent played soccer before but were amazing. We all bond great as a team  and hopefully we can win a few games soon :)

Tour of the State Laboratories

November 16th, all transition year students were taken to the State Laboratories in Maynooth. We left at around nine o'clock and we were back in the school and all by 12 o'clock. What seems like a short period of time seemed like ages. When we arrived we were brought into a room where we were given a talk about what they do there and the different departments in the building. After the talk had finished we were separated into differnt groups. We were given lab coats and soon enough we headed off for the tour.
We were shown around all of the different departments with different people that work in there. We were told what happens in each of the different departments. We also got to see some of the people who work there working on different things. We also saw some samples of different tissues from animals. We saw kidney and liver samples and more.
Overall it was very good and interesting :)
< the lab we visited , pretty nifty 50 ;)

Mini Company Workshop 3

November 15th, all transition year students headed off to Naas for a mini company talk. We arrived a bit late but it was okay. This talk was about what people were making and how things were coming along in different groups. We also learned how to write up our business reports and how judges will mark us. We watched a video of people acting in work in a good way and a bad way , its main point was to show us how to communicate right and how important a first impression is. We got to go to mc donalds after ;)
Our new mini company is called Beady Bits, the idea is making and selling of bracelets. We get our beads all the way in Bray then we come home and make them. So far so good. The bracelets are coming along brilliantly. We are making pink bracelets which are for breast cancer. The money we make from these bracelets are going to the breast cancer charity. Hopefully we raise loads of money for this worthwhile charity :)

Geography Project :)

In geography Ms L gave us a project to do, we have to do a virtual world trip to two 3rd world countries. We were put into different groups, each group has to do 6 countries which is two per person. Im in a group with Alison and Karen. We have a spending budget of 12,000 each. We have to do things out of the ordinary like swimming down the River Nile not the basic things like shopping and sun bathing. My project is on Egypt and India. The projects are coming along great and its really interesting to learn things about the countries that we haven't known before.

Bet you didn't know this :

  • Did you know beer was made in Egypt ;)
  • Egyptian workers organized the first known labor strike
  • Egypt was first to create glass
  • More films are made in India ('Bollywood') than in the USA ('Hollywood')
  • Chess was invented in India

Music Class :)

In music, Ms Gilsenan set us a very interesting and engaging project. There is different groups such as classic, Spanish, African and we were all put into one. Our task is to come up with a song according to our team or just do covers of songs and use the instruments in the class and perform them and make a music video for that song. Im in the African group with Bebhinn, Alison, Patricia, Niamh Mc, Niamh P, Orlaigh and Kate. Our group are doing really well. We are doing covers of Shakiras-Waka Waka and K'Naans- waving flag. Work Experience> Day 2,3,4 & 5 :)

Day 2 of work experience- when i arrived at work i was told what i would be doing. First off all i had to go and talk to one of the residents, Carmel , i brought her to the restaurant and we had a cup of tea and biscuits, we talked for about a half hour. After i went to the office where i sorted out files, i took old files from old folders and put them in new folders. After lunch i went to the reception area and played games with the residents.

Day 3 of work experience- Again i had to go and talk to Carmel for a half hour. After i had finished that i was given a job to go to the library and take down all the books and put them back on the shelves in different categories. After lunch i helped the activities woman Carol organize karaoke, after we got all the residents in the cinema room , we sang to some classic Irish songs.

Day 4 of work experience- Day 4 started off by talking to Carmel for 10 minutes after that i was sent to different bedrooms to talk to the residents, i met some fantastic people. I talked to each resident for about 20mins. Such small things can make their day. After that i had an arts and crafts class, we made angels and Christmas cards with the residents. After lunch i had to do some filing and things like that.

Day 5 of work experience- Last day of work experience i just helped around like sorting out files , talking to some of the residents and helping Ann in reception.

Overall work experience was great i really learned alot. It was very sad saying goodbye to the people and the residents. It is a big difference to school. Now i know to work hard in school because it shows how far in life you go.

A Blog About Water ..

For all human beings in the 1st World and 2nd World the majority of people have access to clean water. Water is an important part of living , it keeps you clean , hydrates you and is a source of energy.  Well one hundred thousand billion people don't have access to clean water , think about it. People are dying due to not having access to water.
Most people that have access to clean water would say that they don't like water or drink it. The amount of water people waste that we get at the click of a finger could actually cost someones life in a 3rd world country. We need to count ourselves lucky and be grateful that we have access to water with the turn of a tap whilst those in the likes of Africa would have to walk 5-10 miles to get a bucket full of water.

Bt Young Scientist, Pastoral Care, Home-Ec, Pe :)

Finally a month of Transistion Year. A great month already we have had , we have done so much and learned so much about ourselves and eachother. In science we were put into our groups for Bt Young Scientist. I am with Lauren Tierney and our project is based on the effects of caffeine on the human body and warn people about caffeine and how it can effect you.

In Pastoral Care (aka SPHE)we meditated. We relaxed while we listened to beautiful hymns in the background. Ms K'Bracken talked us throughout the meditation. We had to imagine ourselves as our "10 year old-self" and see the changes from then and now.

In home-ec , we were asigned a project. The right side of the the room had to research John Rocha and the left had to research Louise Kennedy. Both of these are fashion designers, situated in Ireland.
Here is the link to John Rochas Site , click here , and Louise Kennedy here

In Pe it turned out to be a great class, it was really fun. We played a soccer tournament , Amina and Emnet were together so we could get to know Emnet a little bit better. We were put into 6 groups consisting of 9 per team. My team wore red bibs. We played four matches. At the end Mr.Lawlor announed the winner which was my team who won every game due to the co-operation of the fellow students . :)

Mini Company, Fun Walk and Fundraising for Peter McVerry Trust

On Monday the 20th of September , all Transition Years headed off to Naas for a mini-company work shop at 9.00am. We headed off in two coaches, one occumpanied by Ms.Leonard and the other by Ms.Evans. We had lots of fun on the bus , lots of singing and dancing. When we arrived in The Moat Theathre in Naas we were welcomed by the lovely staff at The Moat Theathre and students from other schools around the Kildare area. We were given our seats and soon enough we were being told about the ups and downs of running a business, the good and the bad and the things to do and not to do. The woman that was giving us the talk her name was Orla. She was lovely and freindly.
The first half Orla showed us videos of running a business that may help us in the process of setting our business. Orla also showed us videos of previous winners and tips we could take on board. She showed us a video of the 2008 winners which were Dig-i music from St.Wolstans who won the National competition. We then had lunch and we headed off to the local shops to buy whatever we wanted or just to have a look around. When we came back we had the 2nd half of the work shop, where we were put into our groups that we would be working in. When that was sorted out Orla then told us to come up with 50 ideas for a business. At the end we all headed to McDonalds , yuum and headed back home for the rest of the day. It was a good day for all.
On Friday the 24th of September we had our annual fun walk. 1st years were pink , 2nd years were red, 3rd years were green , Tys were yellow, 5th years were blue and 6th years were black and white. This year unfortanetly we wernt allowed dress up due to the price of costumes, so we jus had to wear something that was the relevant colour to our year group. Our class Amina danced to Reach for the stars by S Club 7. Ms O'Callaghan our tutor , dressed up as a star which was really funny. I must say our dance did look well after all the hard work we had done preparing for it. Thanks to the teachers who took us out of class to practice and thanks to Ms O'Callaghan who made it a great day with loads of laughs , expecially when she "fell" near the end of the dance. It was a brilliant day, thank god the sun was out.
On Saturday the 25th of September , 15 Transition Years students including myself , headed off to the local tescos to raise money for the brillaint Peter Mc Verry Trust who take in those who are homeless and those on drugs and help get them clean from drugs. Transition Year Trip To Carlingford :)

Monday the 13th of September. Transition year classes Amina and Emnett headed of to Carlingford Adventure Centre Co.Louth. We all met at the nearest gas station Esso at 6.30, we all had some breakfast and some tea. The bus arrived at 7 to bring us down. Twelve girls in my group occupied the mini bus with Ms.Rowan whilst Ms O'Callaghan accompanied the coach with the rest of the girls. We had a fun journey down with people singing and some sleeping. About an hour and a half on the road we were greeted to Co.Louth by the big green fields and sea breeze.
After we collected our luggage from the coach we headed up the hills to Carlingford Adventure Centre. It was a lovely village but so small. We were greeted by the lovley staff. We sat down in the conference room were we were told the rules and what activities we were going to be doing. Everyone was exhausted but still hesitant to have fun on the activities. Shortly after we were given the key to our room. Our group got a lovely 12 bedroom > 6 bunkbeds. Thank god i was on the bottom bunk because i sleep walk and fell of the bed that night. We had a drawer full of sweets which kept us fed for the night. My bed was really comfortable :). We got into our gear that we would need and headed through the city to get ready for our 1st activity. We climbed up a hill in the lashing rain to get to our 1st activitie, we all headed to a little tent where we were given safety helmets and a map of the site .
The aim of this 1st activitie was to get as many jems as possilble by completing little tasks around the site. We all headed off in our groups and completed the various tasks. By the end of activities one we had collected 26 jems in total :). At 1 o'clock we headed back for our lunch. We had so much fun on the way back . Ms O'Callghan and Ms.Rowan got attacked by some of the girls with mud , poor Ms O'Callaghan suffered the worst with mud in her hair , all over her face and in her mouth. We had our lunch and headed off to our 2nd activity which was in the water , that was the BEST one .
We got into our wet suits and we were put into our boats, there was 3 boats attacked to each other. We all paddled from one side of the lough to the other , when we reached the other side we jumped out of the boats the water was freezing but we still swam in it . We paddled over to the peer . Everyone jumped of the peer . I jumped off the larger peer it seemed like i was never going to hit the water. We got dressed and headed back for our dinner. We had lovely home made stew and ice-cream for dessert.
At 7 o'clock we headed for our 3rd activity which was mountain climbing. It was disgusting , we were covered from head to toe in mud. It was a lovely walk but tough. We went back for the evening, we all had our showers. Then we headed to the local chinese. We all got 3 in 1s , Ms O'Callaghan got a satay one to fit in with the group ha. We went back and sat in the conference room around the fire telling eachother stories. 11 O'Clock bedtime , we headed to our beds and had our drawer full of sweets.
8 O'Clock that morning we were woken by the announcements telling us to wake up. We got up changed our covers on our bed and packed and headed for breakfast. We then headed up the hills again for our rope climbing , which was extremely scary but exciting at the same time. It was all about team work to help get the people up the ropes and onto the little green platform. We then headed back for lunch and then we had a game of volleyball :). We then headed for our last activity which was orienterring which was fun and extremely hard. We then headed back , collected all our stuff and said our goodbyes and headed out to the buses.
We arrived back in celbridge at 7 O'Clock . I must say it was a GREAT start to Transition Year.
The fun couldnt have happened without Ms Rowan and Ms O'Callaghan , Thank You
On Wednesday the 15Th all Transition Years and 5th years got their Junior Cert Results at 12.40 , the excitment in the Hall as Ms.Barry entered with the brown envelopes. Everybody Done Brilliant , Well Done Girls :)

We got introduced to our new teachers Ms Mc Ardle, Mr Walsh, Mr Dooley, Mr Seery and Ms O Hanlon. Once we settled down to work we were told what fun things we would be doing through out the year, such as home economics we will be making outfits out of a t-shirt and a pair of three quarter lengths and one person from the group will be modelling the outfit at the end of year fashion show.
This Monday we had a social development with Mr Austin Dunne. It was a fantastic day. Our whole class seemed to enjoy it. Basically the aim of the day was to build 'mega confidence' and get to learn more about each other. We done so many activities as a group and got to learn more about ourselves. We took a personality test. There are 4 groups , red , blue , green, yellow. We got put into one of the colours according to our personality. I was put into the yellow group which means 'mad cow' along with 4 other girls. The day turned out really well. It was a great start to Transition Year. I cannot wait for Carlingford bonding trip on Monday .
